"EducationWorks has changed my life. Its staff enabled me to have respect for myself. Then they gave me a career path. I really love helping people this way.” Darryl Bradford, 2005 AmeriCorps member.
Darryl was a 6th grader at Philadelphia's McMichael School in 1994.
“I had a speech impediment and was very shy. I kept returning to the program because the National School and Community Corps team gave me confidence and boosted my morale enough that by the 8th grade I was able to do public speaking.”
After graduating from Philadelphia's University City High School, Darryl returned to EducationWorks, joining our Digital Services Fellows program as an AmeriCorps member.
“It was fantastic, surprising, a year to remember.”
Completing the program, Darryl is now a Computer Support Specialist at his alma mater, University City High School, where he now keeps over 700 computers in good repair.
With EducationWorks:
• Students are engaged in positive activities with responsible adults who help them stay in school, inspire their love for learning, teach them ways to solve conflicts without violence, give them a chance to feel good about themselves, take responsibility for school and community; and find hope in their future.
• Parents participate more fully in the education of their children and further their own education.
• Teachers benefit from strong support inside and outside the classroom; their schools become better learning environments.
• Community members—residents, store owners, police, churches and mosques, local organizations—work more closely with their schools and one another, and improve their neighborhoods.
• AmeriCorps members have deep experiences, extend their skills in education and human services, and obtain resources to continue their own education.
